Like much of society, Christmas HAS been manipulated to man's will and not God's.

It is over commercialized.
It is/has become a secular holiday.
It has become a lot of group think. "This neighborhood decorates and if you do not, we will shun you". "This neighborhood does NOT decorate and your garish displays need to be banned." "This neighborhood is multi-cultural and your 'christian ways' are triggering to the many non-christians here."

The celebration of the birth of our savior has been forcefully and systematically diminished. It is about how you appear to your fellow man (and women, and trans, and ....).
"Christmas songs" are more about 'winter conditions' and maybe decorations. They should stay secular and avoid the conflict of religion. Call it a Holiday tree, and not a Christmas tree.

"celebrating life, doing good for others, and spending time with your family." That is not a bad description. Celebrate life, and the promise of eternal life thru Christ's birth, death, and resurrection. Doing good for others, is basically the Golden Rule. Family is not just your blood relatives, but the Family of God. Join with like minded people to amplify they good and help others join you.

IMO, "God is Love". Love God. Love your neighbor as yourself. Love all people. (You can hate the sin, but not the sinner.)

I am not Catholic, but I am a fan of something Sir Francis of Asceses reported said: "Preach the gospel. If you MUST, use words."
Be God like and be Love. That is the true reason for Christmas.
