Ukraine has been virtually identical to Russia in its problems for centuries. The infamy which emanates from that part of the world is grotesque and ubiquitous. It was a corrupt, violent shit-hole before, during and after they got nukes because it is run by vicious, cowardly Satanic thugs. As in virtually every country in the world, it's not so much that the people are bad, but that the cacogens have gained and hold government power. Until that trend reverses, supporting Ukraine at great cost to more-civilized countries will yield only massive, needless loss of blood and treasure. See, the "war" the Ukrainian leadership has convinced their people to fight is not for the Ukrainian people's benefit, it is solely for the benefit of a minuscule percentage of the population connected to their own corrupt oligarchy. It might be better for the world if we just nuked both Russia and Ukraine out of existence and started over by repopulating them with robots built by Elon Musk.
