On average, two million people in the United States each year successfully use a firearm to defend themselves/other innocent people against violent attack. In more than 50% of the cases, they don't even have to fire the weapon. 

The above is one of the cases where the weapon WAS fired - neutralizing the would-be murderer before he could murder anyone. He ended up murdering only himself. Karma? You be the judge.
