Opinions differ on the brilliance of Gates. It's somewhat of an urban myth that he was not technically proficient - I think he was, but also had some greatness in his basic abilities to apply knowledge in real time. The one thing we all seem to agree on is that some of his stances and activities are outrageously immoral and his overall character is suspect.
