Kerry to Block Court Nominees Who Had No Abortions

April 23, 2004 -- U.S. Sen. John Kerry said today that he believes so strongly in a woman's right to choose, that he will filibuster any future Supreme Court nominees who have not had at least one abortion.

"This nation needs a combination of legal scholarship and practical experience in the highest court," said Sen. Kerry. "I've always said that it's wrong to apply a litmus test to judicial nominees, but I was talking about liberal nominees."

Sen. Kerry said a Supreme Court nominee would have to show some physical evidence or documentation that he or she personally had one or more abortions.

Anita Mandablo, president of the National Abortion Rights Action League, applauded Kerry in a written statement.

"Along with John Kerry, we're fighting to ensure that abortions are legal, cheap and easily accessible," the statement read. "Abortions are a crucial element of a balanced sex life for every American."

Kerry Will Nominate Only Justices Who Support Abortion

WASHINGTON (AP) -- Democratic presidential candidate John Kerry's campaign said Friday that religion should not be an issue in U.S. politics after a top Vatican official said Catholic politicians who support abortion rights should be denied communion.

Cardinal Francis Arinze would not comment specifically about Kerry, who is Catholic and supports abortion rights. But when asked in general about ``unambiguously pro-abortion'' Catholic politicians, Arinze said such a politician ``is not fit'' to receive communion......

Kerry scheduled a rally Friday with leaders of women's groups to compare his stand on abortion with what he says are President Bush's extreme anti-abortion positions....

Kerry has said he would nominate only Supreme Court justices who support his position. Bush approves of abortion only in cases of rape or incest or when the pregnancy endangers a woman's life.....
